How To Get Your Hair Ready For Festival Season

June 3, 2019

It’s that time of year again, festival season is quickly approaching and it’s got us all wondering - How can I prepare my hair for 3/4/5 days of dirt?
If you’re not fortunate enough to have the VIP festival tickets that include showers (oh, how we envy those fresh haired VIPs), then you’re going to be slumming it with filthy bedhead for a few days. It’s still important to keep your hair care up during the festival season, particularly if you’re out in the sun all day. We’re going to be showing you how to protect, prepare and style out your festival hair.

Before the festival:

1. Train your hair

Whichever festival you’re attending, if you’re camping, you’re not going to be able to wash your hair for a good 3, 4 or even 5 days. The truth is most of us wash our hair too frequently, so our hair is not used to its own oils. At least a month before the festival, get yourself a shower cap and try to wash your hair less often. Sure, at the start you may feel like one of the ‘T Birds’ from Grease, but your hair will become accustomed with its own oils and a little bit of dirt. If you can successfully get your hair washing down from every other day to every 2 days, then every 3 days, possibly 4 days, then you’ll have no problem tackling the festival season.

2. Dye your hair at the salon

One sure fire way to get a festival hair look is to dye it. Whether it be multicoloured, neon or pastel, nobody can resist a colourful do. Everyone will be so in awe of your new hair, they’ll fail to notice the small family of festival bugs that have housed there. And nothing can give you confidence like the feeling of salon fresh coloured hair, so why not treat yourself before you spend a weekend in a small, sweaty tent?

3. Strategically timed wash

This probably goes without saying but in order for your hair to be freshest for longest, make sure you wash your locks the night before, or morning of (if you have time) the festival. This wash needs to be a deep, deep clean so grab your favourite shampoo and really massage it into your scalp, salon style. If you are prone to greasy hair quickly, just use your favourite conditioner on the ends of your hair to save you scalp any unnecessary grease buildup. Consider curling your hair after to create some extra volume that can last longer.

During the festival:

1. Dry Shampoo

The secret is well and truly out now about dry shampoo. On the second or third day, if you’re hair is starting to get that blinding grease shine to it, use dry shampoo to counteract the grease and give your hair a new lease of life. Dry shampoo is everyone’s best friend; it dries up grease, adds a fruity smell and shed loads of volume. If your festival is tight on aerosols, there are brands such as Lush that have it in a shake bottle. All your hair problems solved.

2. UV Protection

This is particularly important if you have coloured hair. If the sun is showing its face and you’re out dancing around in it all day, it will take a toll on your hair. Quite the opposite dry shampoo, UV hair sprays will protect your hair from drying out in the heat. Even if you’re not looking out for your liver for festival weekend, it’s still important to look after your haircare.

3. Accessories

On the last day of the festival, when you have dry shampooed your hair into fluffy oblivion, it’s time to bring out the big guns. Flower crowns are slightly last year, but this year it’s about hats and hair clips. Fortunately for us, headwear is pretty fashionable at the moment and popular with celebrities and instagram influencers, so you can style it out. You can wear all types now, baseball, bucket, beanie, dad hats, even a beret.  I would recommend saving your hat for the final day of the festival or you will be stuck with hat hair for the rest of your weekend.

4. Braids

Another great way to style out your dirty hair is to whack it into a braid. This might require a bit of practice beforehand and an evening watching YouTube tutorials, but it’s worth it. If the word gets out, everyone with long hair will be queued outside your tent asking who’s braiding. To add a bit of extra festival oomph, you can add accessories like clips, coloured extensions, hair bands. Go wild.

After the festival:

Your hair’s going to be wanting some extra attention after its dry shampoo assault (particularly if you have coloured hair), so make sure to gently clean when you get home. Using your favourite hair mask is a good idea, leave it on for as long as you can and your hair will thank you. Use a leave in conditioner or Moroccan Oil for extra silky-ness. If you really want to go that extra mile, you can pop down to the salon and ask for a hair care treatment such as Olaplex. This will make your hair feel strong, silky and healthy. The Hair Boutique offers an Olaplex and mini Olaplex treatment that will bring your hair back to life!
