Our Guide To Student Hair

January 16, 2020

Between 9AM lectures, revision and having a social life, often student's hair can take a backseat. It can be a bit grim, you're up all night, your shower has the water pressure of someone gently crying on you and funds are low. Here's our hair guide for students, filled with hair tips and tricks to see you through the term.

1. Balayage and root melt

Save yourself money when visiting the salon by having a balayage. During a balayage, the colour is painted on the ends of your hair and blended into the roots to look effortlessly natural. This means you have no harsh regrowth, no trip to the salon every 4 weeks for a root touchup, no breaking the bank. A balayage can last up to __ months.

If highlights are more your thing, don't despair, we've got a student hack for you too. Ask your Stylist for a root shadow. With a root shadow, your Stylist will blend your natural root colour in with your highlights. So when your hair regrows, there's no harsh line between natural and dyed hair.

2. Dry Shampoo

We're pretty sure dry shampoo is a staple for every student. For those days you're too busy studying (or partying) to wash your hair, use dry shampoo to save your greasy locks. Spray it on your roots, massage into your hair and you're good to go for another day. We love the Goldwell Ultra Volume Dry Shampoo, but there's nothing wrong with grabbing a Batiste from Boots. Batiste also do a special dry shampoo for dark hair that won't make your roots appear lighter.

3. Easy waves

As a student, you probably don't want to be spending a long time in the morning sorting your hair out for the day. Why not get your hair prepared the night before? Put your hair in a quick plait or simply twist sections of your hair and clip them to the top of your head (milkmaid style)and sleep on it. The next morning undo the plaits and you've got easy curls.

4. Take advantage of student discount

As tempting as it might be to save a few quid, don't be tempted to do a DIY cut at home. Take advantage of our 20% student discount! Valid with selected Stylists for cut, blow dry and restyles. Book your appointment by calling us on 01392 499162 or book online here.

5. Shampoo and conditioners

Be aware of your product use, don't squeeze half a bottle of shampoo on your hair in an effort to get squeaky clean. The recommended max amount of shampoo to use is 2 teaspoons. So save yourself some cash and use less product!

When you're buying drugstore shampoos and conditioners, try to avoid any that contain silicones. Silicones are plastics that make your hair look shiny in the short term. In the long term, silicone builds up on your hair, making it heavy and dry. That's going to cost you more money in the long term to repair, so try to look for silicone free products.

Invest in a good leave in conditioner or hair mask. Student life can be hard on your hair, so make sure you treat it every once in a while to a deep condition. We recommend Olaplex, which is more expensive than drugstore conditioners but a small amount goes far and it works miracles on dry hair.

6. Hairspray

For that rare occasion you go all out on your hair, secure it with hairspray. You want to ride that good hair day feeling for as many days as you can, so get your hairspray on.
