Scalp Bleach vs Highlights

July 30, 2020

If you've learnt your lowlights from your babylights, balayage from your ombre, it's time to learn the difference between highlights and a scalp bleach.

What is the difference between scalp bleach and highlights?

A scalp bleach is a lightening method that is used to achieve a very light hair colour, such as blonde/white/silver. The bleaching method ensures that your hair is one tone, as opposed to having lots of different tones of blonde in your hair.

During a scalp bleach, bleach is painted directly onto your hair and scalp and left to develop - it doesn't require any foils. Just a warning - it can make your scalp feel tingly as the bleach develops! It takes around 1 and a half/2 hours.

Whereas highlights are off scalp (meaning bleach doesn't touch the scalp). Highlights are weaved into foils packets or mesh and depending on the type of highlights (T section, half head or full head) it creates a multi tonal

A scalp bleach takes around 2 hours and highlights can take up to 3 and a half hours.

Which is right for me?

It's best to discuss with your stylist whether highlights or scalp bleach will work best for you. Some things to consider are:

  • Maintenance - scalp bleach requires much more maintenance than highlights. The harsh regrowth from a scalp bleach means you'll have to pop back to the salon every 4-6 weeks to get your roots done and though we love seeing your faces, we know that isn't always doable.
  • Scalp conditions - if you have a scalp condition, you should never have a scalp bleach. Bleach will only further irritate your scalp and cause more damage.

If a scalp bleach isn't appropriate for you, babylights are the next best method to achieve a similar result. Babylights are thoroughly packed in highlights and can achieve the same lightening results. You can learn more about babylights in our previous blog post here.
