How to Find the Right Shampoo for You

August 15, 2016

With literally hundreds of shampoos available on the market, it can be overwhelming to figure out which one is best for you.  But buying the right shampoo doesn’t have to be such a daunting task.

The key is selecting a shampoo that is made for your particular hair type and texture.  Check out the guide below for finding the shampoo that is right for YOU.

“Normal” Hair

Normal hair is basically hair that doesn’t tend to be too oily or too dry.  If you have normal hair, you are very lucky!  So you want to be sure to maintain your hair’s health by using a shampoo that will preserve its softness, shine and manageability.  Use a shampoo that is gentle and won’t strip or damage your hair.  Ingredients like white tea, Vitamins A, C and E, and wheat protein are good for maintaining healthy hair.

Curly Hair

Since curly hair can frizz easily, moisture is key.  The right amount of hydration will keep frizz at bay and maintain your curls’ shape and elasticity.  Therefore, you should look for products with ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, olive oil and glycerin.  They will keep hair hydrated, boost shine and keep your curls bouncy and healthy looking.  On the contrary, be sure to avoid shampoos with silicone in them, which can deter moisture from being absorbed into your hair.

Fine or Thinning Hair

Thinning or fine hair can use some extra “oomph,” so choose shampoos that are volumizing or thickening formulas, designed to plump up and strengthen your hair strands.  Ingredients to look for include lavender, rosemary and lemongrass, which promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.  As well as nettle root extract, which reduces hair loss and improves scalp circulation.

Thick Hair

Like curly hair, thick hair requires the proper amount of hydration or it can become unruly.  Balanced moisture will help control volume, so look for ingredients like avocado oil, macadamia nut oil and soy protein, which will hydrate your hair, seal the cuticles and control unwanted volume.

Coarse or Kinky Hair

Coarse or kinky hair tends to require special products to keep it looking healthy and strong.  Products specially designed for coarse hair will include ingredients like shea butter, panthenol or glycerin to keep hair hydrated without stripping its essential oils.

Oily Hair

Oily hair, believe it or not, is caused by a dry scalp.  The oiliness occurs when your scalp overcompensates for the dryness by producing too much oil, which then sits on the roots of your hair.  Therefore, it’s important to use a shampoo with ingredients such as tea tree oil that will balance your scalp.

Dry or Damaged Hair

Hair that is naturally dry or damaged from chemical treatments requires extra moisture to feel healthy and strong.  Nourishing shampoos will hydrate your hair, while smoothing the cuticle and loosening tangles.  You should also follow up with a rich conditioner that will provide more moisture for your locks.

Colored Hair

Since colored and highlighted hair is susceptible to “wash out,” you want to be sure to use a shampoo that is made specifically for color treated hair.  They are typically sulfate-free (meaning they will not create a lot of lather) and sometimes even deposit small amounts of color onto the hair with each wash to maintain the vibrancy of your color.

Special Needs

In addition to hair type, you should take into consideration any special needs you may have when choosing a shampoo.  For example, dandruff or a flaky scalp requires a special medicated shampoo that will clarify your scalp and prevent further flaking.  Likewise, special shampoos for hair loss include ingredients that will stimulate the scalp and promote new hair growth.  For swimmers and those who are in the sun a lot, protective shampoos with UV filters and vitamins C, B5 and E will protect your strands from drying out and losing colour.  Even ageing hair can be treated with shampoo that is specially formulated for grey hair that will restore the hair’s radiance.
