Ready to try out a bold new hair colour this season, but afraid you won’t be able to maintain it once you leave the salon? No need to fear.
Maintaining your colour can be simple and effective if you follow just a few easy steps once you get home.
First of all, it’s important to remember that colour will make your hair more porous, meaning it is more likely to release colour molecules every time you get it wet. So, it’s important to keep your hair moisturised and well-conditioned. You can start by asking your stylist to use a hair colour that contains natural oils that will help your hair retain moisture and keeping it looking healthy and shiny.
Then, make sure you condition your hair every time you shampoo, using a colour safe or colour protecting conditioner.
Proper shampoo techniques will also help you to maintain your hair colour. First, do not shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours after getting it coloured. Then, when you do shampoo, make sure you use a sulfate-free, colour protecting shampoo with lukewarm or cool water (not hot), and only shampoo two to three times per week to help your colour stay longer.
On the in-between days, make sure to keep your hair from keeping wet by wearing a shower cap or pulling your hair back into a high ponytail or bun. You can also use just conditioner on those days or if you’re afraid of looking oily, spray a colour-safe dry shampoo on your roots to absorb some of the natural oils.
You may also want to treat your hair to some extra moisture once a week, by doing a deep conditioning treatment, a leave-in treatment or a hot oil treatment. These will not only help to maintain your colour, but also leave your hair looking shiny and soft.
Minimising the amount of heat you expose your hair to, by cutting back on the use of dryers, irons and curlers, will also help keep your colour intact longer. When you do style your hair
