Pink Hair: Is It Right For You?

July 16, 2022

Pink hair embodies a sense of fun and freedom. This guide will help you decide if pink is the right choice for you, find your perfect shade, and give you tips to keep your colour looking at its best.

There are many different shades of pink to choose from, from bright fuschia to a more subtle pink lemonade. Our hairdressers in Exeter are experts at applying colour and are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

Are You Ready To Commit?

If your hair is naturally darker you will need to lighten your hair before pink can be applied. This combination of lightening treatments and dye is likely to dry out your hair and could lead to damage and breakage. If your hair is already weak, brittle, or dry then any damage is likely to be more severe.

Consider what sort of condition your hair is in. If it is already brittle and dry, make sure you are using conditioner every time you wash your hair, and treat yourself to a deep conditioning mask every couple of weeks. It may also be worth cutting down on the use of heated styling tool while your hair recovers. Your hair should be healthy and in great condition before making the switch to pink.

Even if your hair is already in good condition, using conditioning treatments before your colour appointment will make your hair more porous and help you achieve the best results. Unfortunately, all pink hair will eventually start to fade. Consider whether you are able to commit to regular touch ups to keep your colour looking at it’s best, or if you would prefer to let it fade out gradually.

Following the lightning and dyeing process your pink hair will require some extra care. Keep the use of heated styling tools to a minimum, and if you can’t bear to give them up completely use plenty of heat protection spray and a lower heat setting.

Find The Right Shade

Different shades of pink will suit different skin tones. It is a complex colour and can be as warm, cool, or deep as you like. Our colourists at our Exeter hair salon can make up a shade that will perfectly complement your skin tone and make you stand out for all the right reasons.

Fair Skin

Bright pink with red undertones will add a splash of excitement to your look and create the illusion of a warmer skin tone. However, it is best to stay away from neon pink or magenta as these can emphasise the cool undertones in your skin and make you look washed out.

If you fancy something a little more understated, blush pink hair colour also looks great with fair skin. This can be melted together with a white blonde to create a dreamy yet subtle look.

Olive & Medium Skin

Any shade of pink is likely to look great on those with olive or medium skin, especially those who have naturally dark hair. Create a fierce and fiery look with magenta or fuchsia, or keep it more subtle with shades of mauve or peach.

Flamingo and cupcake shades are also great choices for those with medium or olive skin. These can be combined with pastel blush highlights to enhance your natural skin tone and create a radiant look.

Darker Skin

Bold and vibrant shades look striking on those with darker skin tones and naturally dark hair. Fuchsia, neon pink, and magenta will enhance your complexion and create an eye-catching look.

Check Your Undertones

Find your skin undertone by looking at your wrist veins under natural light. If your veins appear green, you are likely to have warm undertones, whereas if they are blue or purple your undertones are likely to be cool.

Deeper pinks with flecks of yellow and orange will enhance the features of those with warmer undertones. For those with cooler undertones, a blush or violet/blue based pink will complement your complexion. Use both your skin tone and undertone to narrow down which shade to choose. Our colourists at our Exeter hair salon will also be able to advise what will look great on you.

If your hair is naturally very dark, speak to your stylist about which shades you can realistically achieve. The amount of bleach required to achieve a cool pastel shade is likely to be very damaging to your hair. Luckily, there are plenty of stunning shades of deeper pinks that look amazing and don’t require as much bleach.

What To Expect At Your Appointment

You’ve decided that the time is right to embrace pink hair and you have an idea of your preferred shade. The next step is to book an appointment. Dyeing hair pink should always be carried out by a professional to reduce damage and achieve the best results.

Your appointment will begin with a consultation. Feel free to bring along any pictures of the shade of pink you would like. Depending on how dark your hair is, you could consider transitioning to pink more gradually by trying an ombre, balayage, or highlights. Your stylist will be able to advise you on the best options for the look you would like to achieve.

Our Exeter hairdressers use professional products which help to protect your hair and repair any damage caused by bleaches and dyes. Our salon specialises in creative colours and will give you expert tips on how to keep your colour looking fresh for as long as possible. Book an appointment or give us a call on 01392 499 162.

After Your Appointment

Keep your colour looking fresh for as long as possible by using sulfate free shampoos that have been specially formulated for coloured hair. It’s best to limit shampoo sessions to twice a week to prevent your colour from being stripped away prematurely. Use a dry shampoo to absorb any build up of grease or oil between washes.

Wash your hair in cold to lukewarm water if possible. Hot water opens your hair cuticle which leads to the colour seeping out and starting to fade. It also strips the hair of natural oils which keep it moisturised and supple.

Treat your hair to regular deep conditioning mask treatments after your appointment, especially if it has been lightened, This will help to achieve soft and glossy hair and repair any damage caused by bleaching. Our colourists at our hair salon in Exeter will give you tips for maintaining your hair colour based on your own unique shade and hair type.

Unfortunately, pink hair will always start to fade with time. Either book an appointment for a refresh or embrace your new shade.
